Mayday!, a hip-hop group from Miami, gained widespread attention with their 2006 viral hit “Groundhog Day,” which broke records on YouTube by racking up over two million views in just 48 hours. The group, founded by MC Bernbiz (Bernardo Garcia) and producer/keyboardist Plex Luthor (Aaron Eckhart), initially made waves in Miami’s underground rap scene before attracting mainstream interest. Their unique blend of hip-hop, rock, jazz, and Miami dance influences was showcased in their 2006 debut album, which earned them recognition as mtvU’s “Freshmen Five” artists. Despite facing challenges when their label went bankrupt, Mayday! eventually signed with Tech N9ne’s Strange Music in 2010, continuing to release successful albums like Take Me to Your Leader (2012), Believers (2013), and South of 5th (2018), which topped the Billboard reggae chart.
